SPEECH & DRAMA

Speech and Drama encourages students to develop their abilities to communicate clearly and effectively. It is an active and engaging course where students bring texts to life. 

Speech and Drama enables students to develop a deeper appreciation for literature and  use their imagination and creativity in developing their communication skills.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Students will engage with poetry, dramatic texts, declamations, public speaking, drama games, improvisation, and performance.

This course is a blend of classic speech and drama training and contemporary communication skills. Students will develop an awareness of the elements of drama (role, character and relationships, situation, voice, movement, space and time, language and texts, symbol and metaphor, mood and atmosphere, audience and, dramatic tension). At the same time, students will have the opportunity to apply speech and drama skills to modern everyday contexts such as speaking on camera and exploring the “YouTube voice”.

SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH SPEECH & DRAMA

Speech and Drama supports skills in communication, teamwork, dialogue, negotiation, and socialization. It fosters creativity and imagination. It helps us to improve our understanding of human behaviour and to empathise with a range of diverse situations. Students will learn to engage an audience and to communicate with confidence and charisma.

Assessment

Students will be formatively assessed throughout the year and will participate in term assessments also. Assessments may include individual or group performances, in person or recorded.
